Why a Hummingbird?
We get this question often, and no, it wasn’t random or a favourite animal of ours!
When we started our dayhome, we wanted to pick something from our Jamaican heritage to bring “a piece of home” to our new one in Edmonton.
Then we thought about our Image of the Child.
Together, we compiled a list of adjectives, and the ones that stood out were, “capable” and “resilient”. We felt that children were seen and portrayed as weak and helpless because of their size, but we knew better.
It was important to us that other adults recognize these positive traits, and that children see it in themselves!
Immediately, the Doctor Bird came to mind!
Did you know that the Doctor Bird is Jamaica’s national bird?
Calling our inspirational animal a doctor might be confusing for a daycare in Canada, so we chose Hummingbird instead! We also learned that there are species of hummingbirds right here in Edmonton!
There is a saying in Jamaica that goes, “Dem likkle, but dey tallawah“, spoken in the local English dialect Patois, which speaks of someone or something that is stronger or better than they appear.
Our slogan is: “We’re small, but mighty!“. It is an English Canadian translation of the original saying, but it also incorporates our belief that children are Mighty Learners!
This slogan perfectly embodies our belief that children, though small, are incredibly capable and resilient. At Hummingbird Early Learning Centre, we strive to empower every child to recognize their inner strength and potential. We are excited to continue this journey, fostering a community where children and their unique abilities are celebrated every day.
